Medication Uses How To Use Side Effects Precautions Drug Interactions Overdose Notes Missed Dose Storage USES: Lansoprazole blocks acid production in the stomach. This medication is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It treats acid-related stomach and throat problems such as acid reflux or GERD, ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Decreasing excess stomach acid relieves symptoms like heartburn, difficulty swallowing, cough, and trouble sleeping. It also prevents serious acid damage to your digestive system like ulcers and esophageal cancer. Lansoprazole may also treat ulcers caused by long-term use of certain pain or swelling drugs (NSAIDs). It may be used with antibiotics to treat ulcers caused by bacterial infection. HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily, before a meal; or as directed by your doctor. Empty the packet and pour the contents into a container with 2 tablespoonfuls (1 ounce or 30 milliliters) of water. Stir the mixture well and drink it immediately. Do not save it for later use. If any granules remain in the container after drinking the mixture, add a little more water, stir again, and drink it immediately. Do not use other liquids or foods to make this suspension mixture. Do not crush or chew the medication granules in the suspension mixture or prepare a supply in advance. Doing so may destroy the drug and/or increase side effects. Do not use the mixture in feeding tubes as it may clog the tube. Antacids may be taken with this medication if needed. The dosage and treatment length is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit. Take it at the same time each day. Continue to take it for the prescribed length of treatment, even if you feel better. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. SIDE EFFECTS: Constipation or diarrhea may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor immediately if stomach pain occurs. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but serious side effects occur: signs of vitamin B-12 deficiency with long-term treatment (e.g., weakness, sore tongue, numbness or tingling of the hands/feet). A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include rash, itching/swelling, dizziness, and trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. PRECAUTIONS: Before taking lansoprazole, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, similar drugs, or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of liver disease and other stomach problems. Some symptoms may be signs of a more serious condition. Tell your doctor immediately if you have heartburn combined with lightheadedness/sweating/dizziness, chest pain or shoulder/jaw pain, pain spreading to arms/neck/shoulders, or unexplained weight loss. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Breastfeeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them. This drug should not be used with atazanavir and nelfinavir. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use. Some products need stomach acid to be absorbed properly, so lansoprazole may change how well these other products work. Before using lansoprazole, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice on how to reduce or avoid these interactions. Based on information for similar drugs, lansoprazole may increase the amount of digoxin absorbed into your blood. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details if you also take digoxin. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and medical tests may be performed to monitor your progress or check for side effects.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F is permitted. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard the product.
