Fluconazole – Oral, Diflucan
Medication Uses: Fluconazole prevents and treats fungal and yeast infections. It belongs to a class of drugs called azole antifungals. It works by stopping the growth of certain types of fungus.
How to Use: Read the Patient Information Leaflet before starting fluconazole. Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. If you are taking the liquid suspension form, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special spoon. Dosage is based on your condition and response to treatment. For children, dosage is also based on weight. Generally, the dose should not exceed 600 milligrams daily. Take this medication at the same time each day. Continue taking it until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear. Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, headache, dizziness, or hair loss may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor. Serious side effects may include fast/irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, and liver disease. Get medical help right away if you notice a serious allergic reaction. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.
Precautions: Before taking fluconazole, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or other azole antifungal drugs or if you have any other allergies. Inform your doctor of your medical history, especially liver or kidney disease. Fluconazole may affect heart rhythm and potassium/magnesium levels. Limit alcohol consumption and consult your doctor before surgery. Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects. During pregnancy, use only if clearly needed. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Drug Interactions: Fluconazole may interact with other medications and increase the risk of serious side effects. Talk to your doctor about all the products you use.
Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Notes: Do not share this medication with others. Use it only for your current condition as directed. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Store the liquid suspension at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Dispose of unused medication properly.
