Can a Person Die from Schizophrenia?

I’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Is this disease fatal?

Doctor’s response

Possible complications for schizophrenia range from medical conditions or shortened life span to negative impacts on family members. For example, residual symptoms can impair thinking. Women with schizophrenia may experience complications during pregnancy and delivery.

People with schizophrenia have a higher rate of death. Almost half will suffer from a drug-use disorder during their lifetime. Supportive and less critical family members can improve their quality of life.
