Nitroglycerin belongs to the class of drugs known as nitrates. Angina occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough blood. This drug relaxes and widens blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily to the heart. This medication does not relieve chest pain when it occurs and is not intended for use just before physical activities (such as exercise or sexual activity) to prevent chest pain. Consult your doctor for more information.HOW TO USE: Read the Patient Information Leaflet from your pharmacist. Remove the patch from its pouch and peel off the protective clear liner. Usually, the patch is applied to the upper arm or chest, but it can be placed anywhere on the body below the neck and above the knees or elbows. Apply the patch to a clean, dry, hairless area. Hair in the area may be clipped but should not be shaved. Avoid areas with cuts or irritation. Do not apply the patch immediately after bathing or showering. Wait until your skin is completely dry. However, you may bathe, shower, and swim while wearing the patch. Press the patch firmly in place with your hand. Wash your hands after applying the patch. Usually, one patch is used per day for 12 to 14 hours or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce skin irritation, apply each new patch to a different area of skin. After removing the old patch, fold it in half with the sticky sides together and discard it out of reach of children and pets. Use this medication regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit. Do not stop using this medication suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this may worsen certain conditions. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. If this medication is used for a long time, it may not work as well and may require different dosing. Notify your doctor if this medication stops working well or if you experience worsening chest pain.

SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, and flushing may occur as your body adjusts to this medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Headache is often a sign that this medication is working. Your doctor may recommend treating headaches with over-the-counter pain relievers. If headaches continue or become severe, notify your doctor promptly. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly from a sitting or lying position. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience fainting, fast/irregular/pounding heartbeat, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. PRECAUTIONS: Before using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or similar drugs, or if you have any other allergies. Inform your doctor or dentist before having surgery that you are using this medication. Inform testing personnel if you are going to have an MRI test, as some patches may contain metals that can cause burns during an MRI. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication. During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly needed. It is not known whether the drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: This medication may interact with other drugs. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all the medications you are currently using, including prescription and non-prescription drugs. This medication may interfere with certain laboratory tests, causing false results. Make sure all your doctors and laboratory personnel know you are using this drug.
