Montelukast Granules – Oral, Singulair
Medication Uses: Montelukast is used regularly to prevent wheezing, shortness of breath, and asthma attacks. It is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems. This medication helps decrease the use of a rescue inhaler and relieves symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis.
How to Use: Read the Patient Information Leaflet before taking montelukast. Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor. You can swallow it plain, dissolve it in certain liquids, or mix it with soft food. Take the dose within 15 minutes of opening the packet. If mixing the granules in liquid, use baby formula or breast milk. Do not mix with water or other liquids. If mixing in soft food, use applesauce, mashed carrots, rice, or ice cream. Take this medication at the same time each day. If using it for asthma or both asthma and allergies, take it in the evening. If using it for allergies only, take it in the morning or evening. If using it for preventing breathing problems during exercise, take it at least 2 hours before. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours. Do not change your dose or stop using this medication without consulting your doctor.
Side Effects: Tell your doctor if you experience rare but serious side effects such as mental/mood changes, numbness/tingling/shooting pain, sinus pain/swelling, or muscle weakness. Seek medical help immediately if you notice symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.
Precautions: Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to montelukast or have any other allergies. Before surgery, inform your doctor or dentist about all the products you use. Discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Drug Interactions: Keep a list of all the products you use and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change your medications without your doctor’s approval.
Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Notes: Do not share this medication with others. Regularly monitor your progress and check for side effects through laboratory and/or medical tests.
Question: If you miss a dose, skip it and resume your usual schedule. Do not double the dose. Store this medication at room temperature away from light and moisture.
