Leuprolide 3 Month (22.5 mg) – Subcutaneous Injection, Eligard
Medication Uses: Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide reduces testosterone levels, slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells and relieving symptoms like painful urination. Discuss risks and benefits with your doctor.
OTHER: This drug may also be used to treat uterus disorders or to stop early puberty in children.
HOW TO USE: This medication is given as a subcutaneous injection once every 3 months. If self-injecting, follow instructions in the package. Use regularly to get the most benefit.
SIDE EFFECTS: Common side effects include hot flashes, sweating, tiredness, swelling, increased urination, dizziness, and mild burning/pain/bruising at the injection site. Talk to your doctor if these effects persist or worsen. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience serious side effects like bone pain, numbness/tingling/weakness, blood in urine, or difficulty moving. Seek medical help right away for very serious side effects like chest pain, irregular heartbeat, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, seizures, or severe allergic reactions.
PRECAUTIONS: Before using leuprolide, tell your doctor if you have any allergies or if you have a history of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol, or sudden cardiac death. Leuprolide may weaken bones and increase your risk for osteoporosis. It must not be used during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Inform your doctor about all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you use.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Regularly monitor your progress with medical tests.
MISSED DOSE: Establish a new schedule with your doctor if you miss a dose.
STORAGE: Refrigerate between 36-46 degrees F (2-8 degrees C). Keep away from children and pets. Safely discard expired or unused product.
