hydrochlorothiazide – oral, Microzide
This medication is used to treat high blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a "water pill" that causes you to make more urine, helping your body get rid of extra salt and water. It also reduces extra fluid caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease, relieving symptoms like shortness of breath and swelling in the ankles or feet.
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily in the morning. Avoid taking it within 4 hours of bedtime to prevent nighttime urination. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it.
Common side effects include upset stomach, dizziness, and headache. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly when getting up. If any serious side effects occur, such as decrease in vision or eye pain, contact your doctor immediately.
Before taking hydrochlorothiazide, talk to your doctor if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Also, discuss your medical history, especially if you have diabetes, gout, kidney disease, liver disease, or lupus. Limit alcohol consumption and avoid prolonged sun exposure while taking this medication.
Do not share this medication with others. Lifestyle changes such as stress reduction, exercise, and dietary changes may increase the effectiveness of this medicine. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and kidney function is recommended. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Store this medication at room temperature away from light and moisture.
