USES: This combination medication treats symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It is believed to be due to a lack of dopamine in the brain. Levodopa is converted into dopamine, relieving symptoms. Carbidopa and entacapone increase the amount of levodopa converted into dopamine.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth as prescribed. Do not increase the dose or take more frequently without consulting your doctor. Do not split, crush, or chew the tablet because it can cause staining. Avoid a high protein diet during treatment, unless directed otherwise. The dosage is based on your condition, response to therapy, and side effects.
Some patients may experience worsening symptoms before the next dose. If these effects occur, contact your doctor for possible dose adjustments. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Use it regularly for maximum benefit. Contact your doctor if symptoms worsen.
SIDE EFFECTS: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach upset, loss of appetite, dry mouth, or difficulty sleeping may occur. Contact your doctor if any of these effects persist or worsen. Some people may experience falling asleep suddenly during daily activities. Do not drive or participate in dangerous activities until you have discussed this effect with your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if any serious side effects occur. This medication may cause darkened bodily fluids and a serious allergic reaction is unlikely.
PRECAUTIONS: Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Consult your pharmacist for more details. This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before use, consult your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history. Minimize dizziness and lightheadedness. Limit alcoholic beverages. Inform your doctor before any surgery. Use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding should be discussed with your doctor.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Check with your healthcare professional about any possible drug interactions. Do not stop or change the dosage of any medicine without checking with them first. This drug should not be used with tetrabenazine. Taking MAO inhibitors with this medication may cause a serious drug interaction. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products you use. This medication can cause false results with urine glucose testing in diabetics.
OVERDOSE: Contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately in case of overdose. Symptoms may include severe dizziness, irregular or fast heartbeat, and increased blinking/eyelid spasms.
NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Regular laboratory and/or medical tests should be performed to monitor progress or check for side effects. People with Parkinson’s disease may have an increased risk for developing skin cancer. Promptly inform your doctor if you notice a change in the appearance or size of moles or other unusual skin changes.
