Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid 500 mg/125 mg – Oral, Augmentin

Medication Uses: Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It works by stopping bacterial growth. This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections and is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Overuse of antibiotics can reduce their effectiveness.

How To Use: Take this medication with a meal or snack every 8 or 12 hours, or as directed by your doctor. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept consistent. Continue taking the medication until you finish the full prescribed amount, even if your symptoms improve. Stopping the medication too early may allow the infection to return. Contact your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Side Effects: Some common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These effects may lessen if you take the medication with food. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if these side effects persist or worsen. Serious side effects are rare but may include easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever, dark urine, persistent nausea or vomiting, severe stomach/abdominal pain, or yellowing of the eyes or skin. This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition called Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have these symptoms. This medication may also cause a mild rash, which should be evaluated by a doctor. This is not a complete list of side effects.

Precautions: Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to this medication or other antibiotics. Do not use this medication if you have a history of liver problems. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have liver or kidney disease or infectious mononucleosis. Elderly people may be more sensitive to this medication. Use caution during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
