GENERIC NAME: TOBRAMYCIN/DEXAMETHASONE SUSPENSION – OPHTHALMIC (TOE-bra-MYE-sin/dex-uh-METH-uh-sown)
BRAND NAME(S): Tobradex, Tobradex ST
USES: This medication is used to treat or prevent eye infections. It contains two drugs. Tobramycin belongs to a class of drugs called aminoglycoside antibiotics, and it works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Dexamethasone belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids, and it works by reducing swelling. This medication treats/prevents only bacterial eye infections and will not work for other types of eye infections. Overuse of antibiotics can lead to decreased effectiveness.
HOW TO USE: To apply eye drops, wash your hands first. Avoid touching the dropper tip or letting it touch your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. Shake the bottle well before each dose. Do not wear contact lenses while using this medicine. Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch. Place one drop into the pouch and close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Apply gentle pressure at the corner of your eye to prevent the medication from draining out. Avoid blinking and rubbing your eye. Repeat for the other eye if necessary. Use this medication regularly at the same times each day and continue using it for the full prescribed time. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
SIDE EFFECTS: Possible side effects include eye redness, discomfort, eyelid itching/swelling. If these persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist. Prolonged/repeated use may result in a new fungal eye infection and increased risk for other eye problems. Serious allergic reactions are unlikely but should be addressed immediately. PRECAUTIONS: Before using tobramycin with dexamethasone, inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies you have. MISSED DOSE: Use the missed dose as soon as you remember, but do not double the dose.
STORAGE: Store the bottle upright at room temperature, away from light. Follow the product package instructions for storage. Keep all medications away from children and pets. Properly discard the product when expired or no longer needed.
