Vaginal Yeast Infections: Terconazole Cream, Suppository
Medication Uses: This medication treats vaginal yeast infections. Terconazole reduces burning, itching, and discharge. It is an azole antifungal that stops yeast growth.
How to Use: Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before starting terconazole. Wash your hands before and after use. Avoid contact with your eyes. Use once daily at bedtime for 3 or 7 days, as directed by your doctor. Learn all instructions in the product package. Use the applicator for the cream or suppository. Lie on your back with your knees up, then insert the applicator or suppository into the vagina. Press the plunger of the applicator to release the medication. Clean the applicator with warm soapy water. If you have external itching/burning, apply terconazole cream once daily and rub in. Continue using this medication every day until finished, even if symptoms improve. Do not use tampons or douches. Talk to your doctor if your condition does not improve within 2 months.
Side Effects: Headache, increased burning/itching/pain, or menstrual cramps may occur. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if these effects persist or worsen. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience flu-like symptoms, foul-smelling discharge, stomach/abdominal pain, rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
Precautions: Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies and medical history, especially diabetes, immune system problems, and frequent yeast infections. Before surgery, disclose all products you use. Ask your doctor about sexual intercourse. The suppository may damage rubber products, so avoid using latex condoms, diaphragms, or cervical caps. Use a different form of birth control or the cream during treatment. During pregnancy, use with caution. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk.
Drug Interactions: Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all products you use. Some drugs may interact with terconazole.
Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Notes: Do not share this medication. Dry the genital area thoroughly and avoid certain clothing for long periods. This medication is specifically for your current condition. If your partner experiences symptoms, encourage them to contact a doctor.
Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.
Storage: Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain.
