Pantoprazole is used to treat stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux). It decreases stomach acid to relieve symptoms like heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. It also helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, prevents ulcers, and may reduce the risk of esophageal cancer. Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before starting pantoprazole and with each refill. Take this medication orally as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Dosage and length of treatment depend on your medical condition and response. If taking tablets, they can be taken with or without food. Swallow them whole and do not split, crush, or chew. If taking granules, take your dose 30 minutes before a meal. Open the packet and mix the granules in applesauce or apple juice. Do not mix with other foods or liquids. Sprinkle the granules on 1 teaspoon of applesauce and swallow immediately, followed by sips of water. Alternatively, mix the granules with 1 teaspoon of apple juice, stir for 5 seconds, and swallow immediately. Rinse the cup once or twice with apple juice to ensure you take the entire dose. Antacids can be taken along with this medication. Take it at the same time each day and continue treatment for the prescribed length, even if feeling better. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Headache or diarrhea may occur as side effects. Contact your doctor if these effects persist or worsen. Serious side effects may include symptoms of low magnesium blood level, such as irregular heartbeat or seizures. This medication may rarely cause severe intestinal condition, so do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have symptoms like persistent diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, or blood/mucus in your stool. Seek immediate medical help if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
