WARNING: This medication can cause serious side effects, including peripheral ischemia (lack of blood flow to the hands and feet) and stroke, especially when taken with certain other drugs. Read the Drug Interactions section for more information.USES: This medication treats migraine headache attacks, relieving pain and other symptoms. Prompt treatment helps you get back to your normal routine sooner and may reduce the need for other pain medications. It does not prevent migraines.HOW TO USE: Read the Patient Information Leaflet before using dihydroergotamine. Learn the instructions in the product package. This medication comes in individual nasal spray vials. Use 1 spray in each nostril at the first sign of a migraine. Wait 15 minutes and then use another spray in each nostril if needed. Do not use more than 4 sprays for a single attack. Lie down and relax in a dark, quiet room after using the medication. Do not use more than 8 sprays in 24 hours or 24 sprays in 1 week. The dosage depends on your condition. Use it as soon as the headache starts for best results. If you have never used this medication before and have risk factors for heart disease, your doctor may monitor you for serious side effects when you take the first dose. Wait 24 hours after taking "triptan" or other ergot medications before using dihydroergotamine.SIDE EFFECTS: Common side effects include nasal/throat soreness, changes in taste, dizziness, and nausea. Stop using this medication and seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious side effects such as chest pain, muscle pain, numbness or tingling, coldness in hands/feet, severe stomach pain, jaw/left arm pain, chest pain/pressure, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, vision changes, or mental/mood changes. Allergic reactions are rare but may include rash, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.PRECAUTIONS: Before using dihydroergotamine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or other ergot alkaloids, or if you have any other allergies. This medication must not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.DRUG INTERACTIONS: Inform your doctor of all medications you use, including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products. Certain medications, bronchodilators/decongestants/stimulants, and antidepressants may interact with dihydroergotamine. Check labels on all your medicines for possible interactions.OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include severe numbness, blue or purple hands/feet, difficulty breathing, confusion, or seizures.NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests may be necessary to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Avoid triggers such as certain foods/beverages, food additives, and lifestyle patterns that may bring on migraines.MISSED DOSE: Take this medication only as needed during a migraine attack. It is not taken on a regular schedule.STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from heat, light, and moisture. Do not freeze or refrigerate. Discard opened nasal spray vials after 8 hours. Dispose of this product properly when expired or no longer needed.
